EM100 Ethernet Module
The EM100 is an onboard-installable Ethernet module designed for seamless integration. Its hardware features include:
- One 10BaseT Ethernet port: Equipped with integrated standard Ethernet magnetics for easy connectivity.
- One CMOS-level serial port: Accompanied by additional general-purpose I/O lines for extended functionality.
- Internal processor: Operates firmware that bridges the Ethernet and serial ports.
The Ethernet "side" of the module connects directly to a standard RJ45 connector, while the serial "side" interfaces easily with the serial port pins of microcontrollers, microprocessors, UARTs, and similar devices.
Hardware Versatility
From a hardware perspective, the EM100 serves as a universal platform for running various network and serial communication applications. Its functionality is largely defined by the application firmware, making the firmware a key element of the module’s operation.
Application Firmware
The EM100 is preloaded with Application Firmware, currently in its third generation ("Release 3"), which transforms the module into a Serial Device Server. This enables the connection of serial devices to Ethernet (TCP/IP) networks.
Firmware Upgrades
The EM100’s application firmware can be upgraded via the module's serial port or Ethernet port:
- Serial upgrades are handled by the embedded Monitor, a fixed "service" firmware within the module. Note that the Monitor itself cannot be upgraded.
- Network upgrades rely on the NetLoader firmware component, which can also be updated through the serial port using the Monitor.
Both the application firmware and the NetLoader are preloaded on the EM100.
Notes
- As the EM100's functionality is primarily defined by its firmware, detailed operational information is provided in the Application Firmware documentation.
- Network upgrades are supported only on the latest EM100-03 revision. For more information, refer to the device Ordering Info and Specifications section.
