Updating these devices via a serial port is a bit tricky, as they don't have a proper RS232 port. There is an easy way out for Tibbo modules that are not embedded into a host device: Such modules can be upgraded using evaluation (EV) boards. We offer EV boards for every model of our programmable modules. Unfortunately, there are no EV boards for our programmable boards. :)
Here is how to wire a board or a module for a serial upgrade:
Only two lines are required — TX and RX. Tibbo boards and modules have TTL-/CMOS-level UARTS, and so an RS232 transceiver (MAX232 or a similar device) is necessary to connect the device's TX and RX lines to a COM port of your PC (or your USB-to-serial adapter). To boot into the update mode of the M/L, you will need to power the board (module) up while pulling the MD line LOW. For example, you can connect a push-button between the MD line and the ground. You will also need a power source that outputs a regulated 3.3V power.
EM1001, EM2000, and EM2001 devices already carry Status Green (SG), and Status Red (SR) LEDs onboard. For other devices you can connect the LEDs externally.
The diagram below shows the EM2000 device, but the same arrangement can be used for all boards and modules.
